Fort Wayne Slides Into Second for Minor League Cities
In 2007, the annual Street and Smith's Sports Business Journal ranked Fort Wayne as the top city in the country for minor league sports. 2008 saw Fort Wayne drop from the spot with the cited reason being "poor attendance at indoor football games."
But this year, Fort Wayne has made a comeback and is listed as second of the 239 minor league markets. Hershey-Harrisburg, Pennsylvania was ranked at first.
According to the Fort Wayne News Sentinel, city officials use the positive rankings to draw crowds to future events.

Fort Wayne to Host Big Ten in 2010 Nat'l Soccer Festival
For the first time ever the Big Ten conference’s seven men’s soccer teams will participate 2010 National Soccer Festival in Fort Wayne. The City of Fort Wayne gave the National Soccer Festival a $10,000 sports business development grant to attract the Big Ten.
“Sports tourism generates between $13 and $15 million annually in our community...,” said Dan O’Connell, president and CEO Fort Wayne/Allen County CVB. “Hosting a Big Ten Conference competition puts Fort Wayne in a position to host future Big Ten events.”
Festival organizers do not know how many attendees to expect for the 2010 festival since it will be the first time for Big Ten Conference play, but it has traditionally had more than 1,000 visitors. Fort Wayne is an attractive location geographically for the conference as it is centrally located to the universities and many of their alumni.
The Big Ten Challenge, the working name for the preseason event, will be part of the festival that also features teams from IPFW, Indiana Tech and St. Francis as well as other Division I teams. The 2010 festival also includes a conference coaches meeting, player picnic, preseason media event and soccer clinics for youth players.
Founded in 2000, the festival is held at Indiana University Purdue University Fort Wayne’s Hefner Soccer Complex. The 2010 National Soccer Festival will be Aug. 26 to Aug. 29. This year’s festival will be Aug. 21, 22 and Aug. 27 through Aug. 29.

Fort Wayne Philharmonic Announces New Director

Constantine gained a reputation in the U.K. as a skilled and versatile conductor before moving to the U.S. He currently serves as Music Director of the Reading Symphony Orchestra in Pennsylvania. The Philharmonic search committee unanimously chose Constantine, because of his ability to reach out to the community and his unconventional shows.
"I've done concerts with motorbikes on stage revving away. I've done concerts with flamingo dancers. With storytellers and great images being projected," Constantine said. "I have ideas that I hope will help open the door to people who want to come into occasionally maybe shorter concerts or concerts that are developed as a tease to just let them experience the atmosphere a bit."
Constantine will take on his new position while staying on as a music director in Pennsylvania. The Philharmonic's 66th season starts in September. You can find more information about dates and tickets here.

Fort Wayne Chosen to Host 2010 IHSAA Girls Basketball State Finals
The Allen County War Memorial Coliseum has announced Fort Wayne’s selection as the host of the 2010 Indiana High School Athletic Association Girls Basketball State Finals.
The agreement is for one year and calls for the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum to host the 35th Annual IHSAA Girls Basketball State Finals and its four state championship games on Saturday, March 6, 2010.
"The proposal submitted by the Fort Wayne business community to host our girls basketball state finals in 2010 was simply too attractive to pass over," said IHSAA
Commissioner Blake Ress. "Even though this decision may create some additional travel for some schools, I think the reception they will receive in Fort Wayne will outweigh those issues. We are excited about hosting this event in Fort Wayne."
