School choice lecture and panel discussion on May 10

The Notre Dame Club of Fort Wayne, in conjunction with the Alumni Association of the University of Notre Dame, will host a brief lecture followed by a panel discussion on topics surrounding school choice.

The event will include a scholar from the University of Notre Dame and two local leaders from the education sector. Attendees will have an opportunity to interact with panel members during a Q&A session. Panelists include:

Professor Richard Garnett - Professor Garnett is the Associate Dean and Professor of Law and Concurrent Professor of Political Science at Notre Dame. Professor Garnett teaches and writes about the freedoms of speech, association, and religion, and also about constitutional law more generally. He is the author of dozens of law-review articles and book chapters. Professor Garnett has been involved with a number of efforts to improve and strengthen Catholic schools and to reform education policy more generally. He served on the Notre Dame Task Force on Catholic Education, is a Fellow of the University's Institute for Educational Initiatives, is a founding Associate of the American Center for School Choice, and consults regularly with the Alliance for Catholic Education. Professor Garnett received his B.A. from Duke University and his J.D. from Yale Law School.

Jonathan Hancock - Mr. Hancock has been the Headmaster at Canterbury School, an independent, college preparatory day school for students age 2 through Grade 12 located in southwest Fort Wayne, since 1982. During his tenure, he has overseen the establishment of the high school and the expansion of the campus. Mr. Hancock has taught English and Latin and coached soccer and tennis. He received both his B.A. and M.A. from Oxford University and his Ed.M. from Harvard University.

Mark GiaQuinta - Mr. GiaQuinta is an attorney with Haller & Colvin. He served four terms on the Fort Wayne City Council as well as on numerous state and local boards and commissions. He currently serves as the President of the Fort Wayne Community Schools Board of Trustees. Mr. GiaQuinta received his undergraduate degree from Indiana University with Highest Distinction and his J.D. from Indiana University. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

The panelists will discuss their views on various aspects of the school choice debate. The event is free and open to the public. If possible, please RSVP by emailing Jacob Benedict.
