Two of our Chamber members, husband and wife David and Mary Pat Nichols, must be bursting with pride. Their daughter Kate Nichols is certainly putting us on the map, as a native of Fort Wayne. Father David Nichols is the owner of Chamber member The Nichols Company, and mother Mary Pat Nichols is a teacher at Chamber member Fort Wayne Community Schools. Kate was recently one of only 25 individuals selected from a global talent pool to participate in TED's (Technology, Entertainment, Design) prestigious fellows program. Kate is now a painter and sculptor in San Francisco. She is a graduate of Fort Wayne's Weisser Park Elementary, Memorial Park Middle School, and Canterbury High School.
TED is a small non-profit organization which brings people together from around the world, focusing on Technology, Entertainment, and Design, as well as science, business, the arts, and global issues. TED's annual conference in Long Beach, California brought together thinkers and doers from around the world, and Kate was given the opportunity to lecture on her work in her artist-in-residency in the Alivisatos Lab at the University of California, Berkeley. Alivisatos is a Materials Science lab specializing in nanotechnology. As the lab's first artist-in-residence, Nichols synthesizes nanoparticles with novel color properties and uses them to create art. Kate is currently completing master’s degree in Visual Studies at the University of California at Berkeley.
