Seeking Mid Level Managers
Lutheran Hospital to Provide Skilled Cardiologists in new Partnership with DeKalb Memorial Hospital
Chamber member Lutheran Hospital is partnering with DeKalb Memorial Hospital of Auburn, IN to provide cardiac catheterization services to patients in the area. For the first time in northeastern Indiana, patients will be able to access diagnostic cardiac catheterization services through a community hospital. These services are almost always reserved for larger tertiary or specialized care facilities.
Officials from Lutheran Hospital and DeKalb Memorial Hospital took part in a ceremonial check presentation that officially signals the start of construction on a 4,000-square-foot cardiac cath lab at DeKalb Memorial Hospital. The diagnostic cardiac cath lab will be an outpatient department of Lutheran Hospital.
The new relationship provides patients greater access to the skilled cardiologists on the medical staff at Lutheran who perform more than 2,800 diagnostic heart caths annually. Lutheran will invest $1.5 million to equip its outpatient cath lab at DeKalb Memorial Hospital.
Patients who may have otherwise ended up in Fort Wayne for heart care will now in most cases be treated at their own community hospital. For those who are admitted as inpatients, additional care such as radiology and lab work will be provided by DeKalb Memorial. Last year, 158 patients from DeKalb County received diagnostic heart caths at Lutheran Hospital to diagnose coronary artery disease.
As part of the arrangement, Lutheran will sign a seven-year lease at DeKalb to operate the cath lab.

Allen County Bad Check Restitution Program Update
The program was started in November of 2003 by Karen E. Richards, Prosecuting Attorney for Allen County to combat the negative impact of bad checks passed to local businesses. Millions of dollars are lost every year by merchants as a result of this ongoing problem.
The Bad Check Restitution Program has been organized to assist local merchants with bad check losses. The primary goal of the program is to obtain full restitution for the victim without adding to the financial burden of the criminal justice system.
Program Statistics:
As of June 30, 2009 $740,000 in bad checks had been restituted.
Checks reported as of June 30: 19,743 (likely to be 20k by end of July or early August)
Offenders completing the class as of 6/30: nearly 3,200 people
Other recent program updates:
Ability to check status of submitted checks online through an ID and password that is assigned by the program and via an automated phone system (as long as they have their merchant number) or via a merchant care rep on the toll-free hotline.
The program still has an easy to use, one page complaint form and is offered at no cost to the victim.

Seminar Teaches How to Negotiate During a Tough Economy
EFCA Battles Continue –Bayh Targeted
(photo caption: Senator Evan Bayh discussing EFCA with Chamber member Dan Starr of Do It Best Corp. on the Chamber’s DC Fly-In [June 2009].)Today begins a month-long campaign designed to bring about a “No” vote from Senator Evan Bayh on the so-called Employee Free Choice Act. The campaign, during the Congressional August recess, includes the use of 117 billboards, hundreds of radio ads and a web site, http://www.donotletevanbayhkilljobs.com/, urging the public to communicate with Senator Bayh and require that he vote “no” on EFCA, in whatever form it may appear in the U.S. Senate. The Economic Freedom Alliance, a midwestern manufacturing federal 527 organization, is the center for the campaign, with support of IMA and many manufacturers and other business in the state. It also coordinated efforts in several other states to move the votes of senators and representatives in those places.
This all-out effort to defeat the Employee Free Choice Act will become visible today. Senator Bayh – a 2007 co-sponsor of the EFCA legislation – move to a position of opposition in 2009. You can get information on the legislation and Bayh’s position thus far.
When The Greater Fort Wayne Chamber of Commerce visited Senator Bayh on this issue earlier this year in DC, he refused to commit to voting against EFCA legislation and also seemed sympathetic to a compromise. Bayh co-authored identical legislation in 2007. The Chamber opposes this legislation and any compromise.
