Hesburgh Lecture Discussing Business Ethics

The Young Leaders of Northeast Indiana (YLNI), in conjunction with the Alumni Association of the University of Notre Dame, will host a Hesburgh lecture followed by a panel discussion addressing current issues in Business Ethics. The event will include two prominent business ethics scholars from the University of Notre Dame and two successful local executives. Attendees will have an opportunity to interact with the panel members during a Q&A session.

The event will take place on Monday, March 23 at the Allen County Public Library Theatre at 6 p.m. Professor of Marketing Patrick Murphy will speak about corporate sustainability projects and the role of corporate ethics going forward and Professor of Management Rev. Oliver Williams will discuss the intersection of company profitability and ethical values. After their presentations the professors will be joined by Ian Rolland and Timothy Kenesey, two local executives, for a panel discussion on business ethics. The moderated panel will include the opportunity for audience members to ask relevant questions.

Speaker Information:

Patrick Murphy - Professor of Marketing
Professor Murphy is the C.R. Smith Co-Director of the Institute for Ethical Business Worldwide and has published two books on marketing ethics and recently received the 2008 Outstanding Paper Award from the Emerald Literati Network for his article entitled “An Ethical Basis for Relationship Marketing: A Virtue Ethics Perspective.” He will speak about corporate sustainability projects and the role of corporate ethics going forward

Rev. Oliver Williams - Professor of Management
Fr. Williams is the Academic Director of the Notre Dame Center for Ethics and Religious
Values in Business and has authored 15 books focusing on business ethics and corporate governance. A former Naval Officer, Fr. Williams served as a member of the United Nations Observation Mission for South Africa’s first post-apartheid national elections in April 1994 and authored The Apartheid Crisis. Other books include A Virtuous Life in Business and Is the Corporation Dead? Social Responsibility in a Global Economy. He will discuss the intersection of company profitability and ethical values - Can You Do Well, While Doing Good?

Timothy Kenesey – Medical Protective
Mr. Kenesey is the President and CEO of Medical Protective, a Berkshire Hathaway company. He has spent a significant part of his career helping businesses define their strategy, improve their market position and grow profitably. He was previously an executive at General Electric and is both a CPA and Attorney.

Ian Rolland – Lincoln National Corporation
Former Chairman and CEO of Lincoln National Corporation, Mr. Rolland is now active in the local community, serving on various boards and participating in numerous philanthropic activities. He has worked with Arts United, Junior Achievement, Nature Conservancy and the Indiana Heritage Trust. Mr. Rolland is also the Chairman of the Board for NiSource Inc.
