Mayor Tom Henry Rides Zamboni to Victory!

By Lauren Richwine, Communications Specialist

I’ve always found the idea of sports on ice to be fascinating. What must have started as just slipping around on the winter pond for fun has now escalated into fiercely competitive events that involve launching yourself into complex twirls and body slamming your opponents. Canlan Ice Sports celebrated the perpetuation of these sports and more with their Ribbon Cutting and Grand Opening ceremony today and they did it in true ice sports style. There was a press conference on ice then cheering as Mayor Tom Henry rode a Zamboni through the ribbon.

Canlan offers multiple public programs such as hockey and figure skating as well as ice rentals and public skating. They also book birthday and skating parties and even have what they call a “bounce party” for smaller patrons that lets them loose in a 17,000 square foot inflatable bounce arena. During the press conference, Mayor Tom Henry called Canlan Ice Sports “an exceptional project”.

The location couldn’t be any more perfect if it tried. Within walking distance to the Fort Wayne Children’s zoo, close to highway 69, and just a jump away from downtown, Canlan has set a new standard for ice rinks in the area. It has also created new jobs, as will the hotel that is being constructed next door.

On Saturday, April 17 Canlan Ice Sports will continue the celebration with $1 skate rental and $5 hockey, as well giveaways, prizes, figure skating demonstrations, food specials, and more. Proceeds from the day will benefit the Fort Wayne Police and Fire Department charities.
