What can a young person in Allen County do to make a difference in their community? They can start by attending the third Allen County United Youth Summit to be held from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m., Saturday, February 21, at the IPFW Walb Student Union. The Summit will encourage discussion and a call for action on some of the most important concerns of young people.
Students have become more involved in helping with community service projects through school and youth groups, and as individuals. The Summit will allow them to take their actions to a new level by meeting with community leaders and other students interested in similar causes. Collectively, they can begin to see that by working on similar needs, they can create more synergy and create lasting change for their community.
The 2009 workshops students identified include addressing the issues of drugs and gangs, welcoming new immigrants, assisting animal shelters, homelessness, living with disabilities, and safe driving habits. Students will select two of the sessions to attend and generate new ways that they can make a difference in these areas. Those who wish to seek additional funding to assist with their project may do so through a Youth As Resources grant application.
The Summit is geared for all Allen County students in grades seven through twelve. February 14 is the deadline for registration for the Summit, which is required.
