New Stimulus Funds Available to Small Businesses

Small businesses in Indiana may now be eligible to receive new interest-free loans through a program created by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The America’s Recovery Capital (ARC) program offers loans of $35,000 to firms that demonstrate immediate financial hardship. The funds must be used to pay down existing debt. The loans will be available through Sept. 30, 2010, or until appropriated funding runs out.

To qualify for the ARC loans, small firms must demonstrate they are experiencing immediate financial hardship due to the economic downturn, but are otherwise deemed by the Small Business Administration (SBA) to be viable. The loans will be made by commercial lenders and can be used for payments of principal and interest for existing, qualifying small business debts like credit card obligations, mortgages, lines of credit, and balances due to suppliers, vendors, and utilities.

To apply for ARC loans, businesses should visit their local SBA-approved small business lenders. The loans will be available through Sept. 30, 2010, or until appropriated funding runs out. Additional information about the ARC loan program is available at http://www.sba.gov/recovery/arcloanprogram/index.html.

In addition to the ARC loan program, the ARRA contained other measures aimed at helping small firms access credit. For instance, the new law increases the percentage of a loan that the SBA can guarantee, makes SBA-backed loans more affordable and provides tools to unfreeze the small business credit markets, helping small companies access capital at affordable rates.

Cancer Services in Need of Volunteers for Special Campaign

Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana needs volunteer groups and individuals to help create mini-neckties in preparation for an awareness campaign for National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in September. The mini-neckties will be used as part of a series of promotional events entitled “Tie 1 On 4 Prostate Cancer” that incorporate blue neckties to draw attention to the prevalence of prostate cancer in Adams, Allen, DeKalb, Huntington, Kosciusko, Lagrange, Noble, Steuben, Wabash, Wells, and Whitley counties.

According to the National Cancer Institute, prostate cancer represents 33 percent of all new cases of cancer in American men. The campaign will culminate with Cancer Services’ annual tribute dinner. The tribute dinner is designed to honor those individuals who have been touched by cancer (victims, survivors, family, friends) and/or those who have helped in the cancer treatment process.

This is a great group activity for service and social organizations. If you or any group you are involved in are interested in participating in tying miniature neckties, please contact Linda Bewley at 866-484-9560 to arrange a demonstration and receive the necessary supplies. This effort will continue until September 1, 2009. For more information visit http://www.cancer-services.org/.

Cancer Services Event Addresses Life Perspectives

Cancer can strike anyone and it often brings difficult questions that challenge life perspectives and belief systems. Local clergy understand firsthand how a diagnosis of cancer can change one’s life and even test one’s faith.

Cancer Services CEO Dianne May will moderate a panel discussion among an oncologist, two clergymen who have personally faced cancer and a clergywoman who acted as a caregiver for a loved one with cancer.

They will share their experiences and insight about how a cancer diagnosis affected their life perspective. This candid discussion is for people with cancer, their caregivers and family, members of the clergy, healthcare providers and anyone who wants a deeper understanding of how a health crisis can impact the spiritual experience.

Panelists include Bishop R. Sheldon Duecker, retired bishop, United Methodist Church and cancer survivor; Reverend Dr. Richard Frazier, Pastor Emeritus, Trinity English Lutheran Church, and cancer survivor; Gary Gize, MD, medical oncologist, Fort Wayne Medical Oncology & Hematology; Kathleen Haller, pastor, Trinity English Lutheran Church, caregiver.

“Mere Mortals Facing Cancer” will take place Wednesday, July 29, 2009 from 7 - 8:30 p.m. at the Allen County Public Library. For more information contact Gail Hamm or Dianne May at (866)484-9560.
