Real Men Needed to Help Community Children

Allen County Commissioner Bill Brown and dozens of local leaders are asking "Real Men" to join them and volunteer for the reading project called Real Men Read - a community effort to close the third grade reading achievement gap.

"Real Men" are needed to ensure that all Allen County third graders can read at grade level and have the tools they need to be successful in life. Real Men Read aims to help all third-graders, but particularly third-grade boys. Studies show that more than half of low-income third-grade boys in Allen County cannot read at grade level.

The goal of Real Men Read is to match one male volunteer with each third grade classroom in Fort Wayne Community Schools and East Allen County Schools. The volunteers will begin in the classrooms on March 12. Volunteers will visit their classroom once a month in March, April and May to read a book with the children and discuss the importance and fun of reading.

To volunteer or to learn about sponsoring books for the classes, visit LearnUnited.org or call Jamie Garwood at (260) 422-4776.

Swinney Pavilion Wins State Award

The Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Department was honored recently with the Outstanding Park Facility award for the new Swinney Japanese Pavilion in Swinney Park. The award was presented by the Indiana Park and Recreation Association (IPRA) at its annual state convention in January.

The pavilion is an open-air structure seating 80 people, and is inspired by Japanese pagodas. The pavilion was constructed with materials meant to represent original Japanese architecture as well as survive harsh weather.

The original Japanese Pavilion was built in 1910 but removed from the park in 1966. The new pavilion serves the needs of families near a baseball diamond and playground in West Swinney.

Ivy Tech & IU Form Partnership

Indiana University and Ivy Tech Community College announced today they are easing the pathway to a teaching career through transfer agreements that will allow Ivy Tech education students to transfer credits towards an IU degree.

These transfer agreements make it possible for students who complete an Associate of Science in Elementary Education at any of Ivy Tech’s 23 campuses to transfer credits earned that will count toward Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education degrees offered at Indiana University campuses. IU President Michael McRobbie and Ivy Tech President Tom Snyder joined other campus leaders at the Indiana Statehouse in Indianapolis this morning to celebrate the signing of the final agreement that will make system-wide transfer possible.

“Working together with four-year colleges and universities such as Indiana University will continue to ensure we meet the needs of the Indiana economy by providing a workforce that is ready for the jobs of the future,” said Snyder.

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development listed elementary school teachers as one of its “Top 50 Hoosier Hot Jobs” in 2008. The department estimates a 12 percent increase in school teacher employment between 2006 and 2016.

The Elementary Education degree transfer agreement adds to other formal agreements that allow students to transfer credits earned in associate degree programs from Ivy Tech to apply toward bachelor’s degrees at Indiana University campuses throughout the state. Previous degree agreements include six liberal arts degrees as well as nursing and criminal justice.

Medical Practices Attracted to Fort Wayne

Fort Wayne is one of the best places in the country to open a medical practice. Fort Wayne ranked fourth in the latest rankings from BizEquity, a Pennsylvania-based firm that estimates small-business values. Business values are based on what they would be sold for in the open market, said Tom Taulli founder of BizEquity.

Taulli said 150 cities with populations exceeding 100,000 were evaluated for the study. Indianapolis ranked 15th.

BizEquity’s rankings consider revenue, number of employees, local economic environment and market share. The firm doesn’t consider medical practices valued at more than $10 million.

Parker Hannifin to Rehire Workers

Chamber member Parker Hannifin said today that it will rehire between 10 and 15 recently cut employees at its New Haven plant in the next two months.

The plant, which makes air conditioner components, got some orders after it decided last month to make the cuts, spokesman Jim Cartwright said Monday.

The job cuts were caused by the worst housing market since 1959, Cartwright said.
As orders for air conditioners rise with the temperature, the company traditionally has hired seasonal workers to help fill them. Those whose jobs were cut will get the first shot at seasonal jobs if Parker Hannifin creates them this year, Cartwright said.

About 400 hourly employees work at Parker Hannifin’s New Haven plant.
