St. Joe Opens New Burn Clinic

Yesterday St. Joseph Hospital officially opened its new regional burn center and outpatient burn and wound clinic. Festivities for the evening included an open house for the general public.

Guests toured the new 18,000-square-foot area, visiting the inpatient burn center and outpatient burn and wound clinic and speaking with team members. Patients will be cared for in these areas beginning the week of September 1.

The St. Joseph Regional Wound Care Center began treating patients in 1990 and may be best known for housing Indiana’s largest multi-person hyperbaric oxygen chamber (HBO), which remains on the sixth floor.

Coliseum Gets New Scoreboard

It is “out with the old and in with the new” inside the Memorial Coliseum arena, as workers are currently installing a new, state-of-the-art video scoreboard.

The new, four-sided scoreboard will include hi-resolution LED video and 360-degree, circular LED ribbon displays at the top and bottom of the structure. Other components to the project include a video control room for the new scoreboard and wiring to connect the scoreboard to the control room, press box and camera positions. Cameras located directly above hockey goals and the center circle will also be added. The system’s capabilities will include replay, slow motion and enhanced graphics.

Click here to see photos of the installation project. Photos are being added daily as the project continues.

It is expected that the first time the new scoreboard will be used is September 8 for WWE's Monday Night RAW wrestling event, to be televised worldwide on the USA cable network.

Free Hands-Only CPR Training This Fall

Mayor Henry's "Don't Miss a Beat" campaign kicks off to train as many as 3,000 people how to save a life through hands-only CPR training.

The hour-and-15-minute class, offered on Saturday, October 25, will train community members ages 16 and older how to give effective chest compressions – using manikins – to adults who have suffered a heart attack.

“Having a diverse and large number of people to know how to perform hands-only CPR can save the lives of Fort Wayne residents,” said Mayor Henry. “You never know who you’ll be able to help. It could be your spouse, parent, neighbor or even a complete stranger who will forever be grateful you spent a small amount of time this October learning compression CPR.”

Compression or hands-only CPR focuses on chest compressions only, no breaths, to keep blood moving in a victim whose heart has stopped beating. It has become increasingly popular in recent years as research has shown it to be effective in helping to save lives.

To register online for the training, visit http://www.3rcpr.org/ or click here. Registration forms are available at the front desk of the City-County Building, the Chamber of Commerce and will be sent to City Utilities customers in their bills next month. Registration forms are also available at Fort Wayne Kroger and Scott’s grocery stores. You can also register the day of the event.

For more information, call (260) 427-1120 or e-mail 3rcpr@cityoffortwayne.org.

Feet on the Street

By Teresa Royer
Member Relations Specialist

I met the President & CEO of the Fort Wayne Urban League, Mr. Jonathan Ray. The Urban League offers many, many services that benefit the community as a whole—everything from homework help to financial literacy classes and everything in-between. A common phrase Jonathan used throughout our conversation was “empowering communities, changing lives." It didn’t take long to see that Jonathan has a true spirit and belief in what this awesome organization is doing.

What struck me the most was when I learned that it was the FW Urban League that orchestrated the peace walk shortly after we read the tragic headlines last spring of the 8 homicides within a few days of each other. The Urban League felt the need to DO something and not look the other way. They got people talking—they met with various groups of people such as youth, incarcerated youth, community leaders, religious leaders, the general public and more. After much discussion and asking questions, they came up with an action plan. Jonathan tells me that people are coming forward as a result of the action plan and want to get involved such as community officials, attorneys and more.

You can read the Action Plan and learn more about the FW Urban league at www.fwurbanleague.com.

Umbrella Series Goes Global

Earlier this year LaBov & Beyond held the Umbrella Series at the Chamber. These parables, performed and acted out by Taylor University students, were geared at helping businesses energize and engage their workforce. Now the Umbrella Series is going global, and its first international stop will be South Korea.

Seoul-based Kyujang Publishing Company approached LaBov & Beyond in late 2007 with a serious interest in translating the Umbrella Series into the Korean language and then publishing it for the domestic market there. An agreement was quickly reached, and the books were printed and put into distribution in early March by Happinion, an imprint of Kyujang Publishing Company. Printing and distribution is expected to continue through the end of 2008.

LaBov & Beyond president and CEO Barry LaBov authored the Umbrella Series books, along with the subsequent Umbrella Collection of business stories, as a way to bring to full color the common internal issues and challenges many of his agency's clients face on a daily basis.

To learn more about the stories that make up the Umbrella Series, visit www.umbrellaseries.com.
